How to Prepare and Paint Concrete the Right Way: A 3-Day Step-by-Step Guide
Painting concrete is one of the best ways to refresh or protect your workshop, warehouse, or driveway surface - but proper surface preparation is essential to achieving a long-lasting, professional result.
At AJP Industrial Supplies, we stock Jotun industrial paints and primers, along with the accessories and knowledge you need to get the job done right. Here’s our three-day guide to prepping and painting both new and old concrete.
Day 1: Cleaning the Concrete Surface
Whether your concrete is new or has been in place for years, the first step is to clean it thoroughly to remove contaminants, dust, and stains.
New Concrete
· Wait at least 6 weeks after the pour before painting.
· Use a light ratio of hydrochloric acid diluted with water.
· Apply with a watering can and scrub lightly with a stiff broom.
· Rinse the area thoroughly and allow to dry.
Old or Stained Concrete
· Use a stronger hydrochloric acid mix to remove oils, stains, or discolouration.
· Scrub using a hard bristle broom to lift embedded grime.
· Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely.
Safety Tip: Always wear the correct PPE when handling acid-based cleaners. Check the product label for directions and protection requirements.
Day 2: Surface Preparation & First Coat
Once the concrete is dry, it’s time to apply your primer or industrial coating.
We recommend Jotun Jotamastic 90 - a durable, two-pack epoxy coating ideal for concrete surfaces.
Mixing Instructions:
· Comes as a kit: Part A (colour) and Part B (hardener)
· Mix at a 3.5:1 ratio (3.5 parts paint to 1 part hardener)
· Stir well and wait 10 minutes before applying
Only mix as much as you can apply in one go - approx. 4 litres at a time is ideal. Enlist a second person to mix while you roll for better workflow.
Day 3-4: Painting & Recoating
1st Coat:
· Thin the first coat by 10% using Jotun #17 thinner
· Apply evenly with a roller or sprayer
2nd Coat (Day 4):
· Apply the second coat without thinner
· Ensure the first coat is completely dry before applying
Coverage Calculation:
To calculate how much paint you'll need:
Length × Width ÷ 8 × 2 = Total litres required
(8 sqm coverage per litre × 2 coats)
Tip: For added safety, sprinkle non-skid aggregate onto the first coat while it’s still wet if slip resistance is required.
Aftercare:
Avoid walking or driving on the freshly painted surface for at least 7 days to allow full curing.
